Trading standards officers are urging caution after a recent spate of incidents across Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

Unscrupulous traders have been offering services such as roof cleaning and other repairs, and are requesting large amounts of cash up front. Call a local builder to do your work.

Yachtswoman rescued off Pembrokeshire

A quadriplegic yachtswoman has vowed to complete her round Britain voyage despite having hospital treatment at Haverfordwest after being rescued off Pembrokeshire.

Hilary Lister, 37, from Kent, is aiming to become the first disabled woman to make the trip solo.

Late on Friday night she was forced to call for RNLI assistance off Strumble Head in what she called the roughest seas she had ever encountered.

But Ms Lister said: "I wouldn't be much of a sailor if all this put me off."

84-year-old woman stabbed in Pembrokeshire

The 84-year-old woman found stabbed to death at a house in the Templeton area of Pembrokeshire has been named by police.

The body of Margaret Ford was found by officers and Detectives are continuing to question a man, originally said to be 42 but who police now say is 48, arrested in connection with the woman's death on Saturday evening.

Dyfed-Powys Police said it was a domestic-related incident and they were not looking for any other suspects.

Tenby Coastguards Have a Busy Day

Three separate incidents during the day of 14th April kept the Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team busy.

The first incident occurred on Morfa Buchan Beach, during the morning, where a 32year old male from Grantham, Lincolnshire, staying locally, was trying to launch a large inflatable with outboard engine into a heavy swell, when the boat turned on its side trapping the man’s leg. The Coastguard Rescue Team and Tenby RNLI Inshore Lifeboat were tasked. The Coastguard Team attended to the injured man until the Air Ambulance arrived and conveyed him to Glangwilli Hospital with a suspected broken leg.

The Tenby Coastguard Team, together with Manorbier Coastguard Team was then called to Saundersfoot Beach around lunch time where a lady from Cardiff, visiting the area with her daughter, fell on the beach sustaining a suspected broken ankle. The injury was stabilised and the lady and her daughter were conveyed by ambulance to Withybush Hospital for treatment.

Their final call was again to Saundersfoot Beach at approx. 4pm where a local 55yr old male had suffered a heart attack. The man was attended to by a paramedic and the Coastguard Team until the Rescue Helicopter from RAF Chivenor, returning from the boating accident, offered to assist. The helicopter was utilised and the man was airlifted to Morriston Hospital for treatment.

INJURED AFTER BOAT LANDS HEAVILY IN THE WATER

Milford Haven Coastguard assistanced five people who were all injured in a large rigid water jet powered passenger carrying vessel, the `Ocean Ranger, which came off a wave and landed heavily in the sea off the coast of south west Wales.

The vessel run by Thousand Island Expeditions is an MCA coded vessel capable of carrying 12 passengers, and was carrying 11 passengers at the time of the incident.

The incident occurred off St Justinians, around a mile and a half from St Davids. Rescue helicopter, R 169, took the most seriously injured person to Withybush hospital after winching the individual from the scene, who was suffering from serious back injuries. After the vessel made its way back to St Justinians, a further two individuals were taken by an air ambulance to the same hospital, both of whom were also suffering from back injuries.

Two further people were taken by land ambulances, also to Withybush hospital, possibly with bruised or broken ribs.

St Davids Coastguard Rescue Team were also mobilised and they assisted in getting the passengers off the vessel and communications shoreside.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch have been informed and MCA surveyors will visit the craft tomorrow.

St Davids RNLI Inshore Lifeboat whilst out on exercise during the afternoon of 12th April came across four kayakers having difficulties at the North of Ramsey Sound, They were escorted back to Whitesands Beach where the inexperienced paddlers, from Evesham, Worcestershire, were met by St. Davids Coastguard Rescue team and given words of advice.

New facility at Tenby Harbour in Pembrokeshire has now opened

The former Ministry of Defence building on the quayside has been transformed into a brand new yacht station and harbour office for visiting sailors and mariners.

The building has been refurbished by Pembrokeshire County Council at a cost of £150,000
The new accommodation comprises a well-equipped kitchen and dining facility; a comfortable sitting area - as well as a shower, toilet and washing and drying facilities.

There is also office accommodation for the harbour master and his assistant, as well as two stores rooms and a meeting room able to accommodate about a dozen people.

Following a call from the local Police, at 11pm 3rd April, the Cardigan RNLI Inshore Lifeboat went to the River teifi, under Cardigan Bridge, where they recovered a local 26yr old male from the waters. He was taken to an awaiting ambulance for treatment. Penrhyn Coastguard Rescue Team also in attendance.

St. Ishmael’s girl falls 70 ft on Lindsway Cliffs

A young lady (approx 19yrs old) from St. Ishmaels, is in Withybush Hospital this morning with serious injuries (assessed by para medics as pelvic, abdominal, spine and ankle) after falling 70 ft down the steps and cliff leading to Lindsway Beach, St. Ishmaels at approx. 11.40pm 1st April.

The alarm was raised with the Coastguard Operations Room at Milford Haven and immediately the Coastguard Rescue Teams from Dale and Broad Haven were alerted and tasked. The RNLI Inshore Lifeboat from Angle was also requested to stand off the bottom of the cliffs, Once on scene Coastguards and Paramedics from the Ambulance Service made their way down the cliffs and steps to where the injured girl lay. The Rescue Helicopter from Chivenor was also requested to attend. The girl was stabilised and, because the Helicopter had been diverted to a more serious incident in Swansea, she was placed on a spinal board and carried by the Coastguard Teams to the top of the cliffs. By this time the Rescue Helicopter had been released from Swansea and had landed near the cliff top. The injured girl was placed into the helicopter and taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Withybush for treatment.

Energy firm to compensate customers

Energy firm Scottish Power has announced plans to compensate customers who overpay through having their monthly direct debits set too high.

From the beginning of June, the company will automatically pay back £1 for every £33 that customers are in credit by at the time of their annual direct debit reassessment.

The refund, which is equivalent to paying interest of around 3%, will be paid to people who have balances of more than £100, up to a maximum of £5,002.

Dale and Broad Haven Coastguard Rescue Teams were called at approx. 2.20am 28th March by the Dyfed Powys Police to assist in the search for a 26 year old man who had fallen into the River Cleddau by the Bristol Trader Public House, Haverfordwest. As the search was taking place the man was located in the water by the Mid and West Wales Fire Brigade and returned to shore. He was taken to Withybush Hospital for treatment but transferred to Glangwilli Hospital where his condition was described as critical.

‘Emily Rose’ Escorted back by Angle Lifeboat.

At approx. 4pm 22nd March, the fishing vessel ‘Emily Rose’ with 2 persons on board reported having a fouled propeller just south of Jack Sound and Skomer Island. The RNLI All Weather Lifeboat from Angle was launched to her assistance, but before the Lifeboats’ arrival the rudder was freed and the vessel, escorted by the Lifeboat, made her way back to Milford Haven.

75 year old lady suffers suspected Cardiac Arrest Bosherston Lily Ponds.

Castlemartin and Manorbier Coastguard Rescue Teams together with the Ambulance Service attended the Bosherston Lily Ponds at 1.45pm 20th March,

Following a report that a lady had fallen off a bridge into the ponds. On their arrival the Coastguard teams found that the 75 year old lady, from Bristol and on holiday with her husband, had been recovered from the water by members of the public and was being attended to by the ambulance crew. The lady was taken to Withybush Hospital were unfortunately she died.

Council Tax increased by 4.2% for Pembrokeshire Residents

Council tax increase approved, Pembrokeshire residents will see an increase in council tax this year, full council agreed today.

An increase of 4.2% was agreed by the Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet earlier this month and this was ratified by the majority of councillors this morning.

The increase equates to a £26.81 increase on last year.

Fined for Breaking the Smoking Ban in Pembrokeshire

A Conservative club and its steward must pay £5,000 in fines and costs for breaking the smoking ban.

The Balfour Conservative Club in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, and John Phillips were each fined £1,000 by magistrates after pleading guilty.

Pembrokeshire council officers went there after a tip-off and found three people smoking in a room.

Speaking after the hearing, Mr Phillips said he felt personally the level of the fine was "over the top."

The prosecution was brought by the council, which was also awarded £3,000 costs.

It was the first in the county since the ban on smoking in enclosed public places was introduced in Wales in April, 2007.

Car crash claims three lives

Three people have died after the car they were travelling in crashed near the village of Roch, which is between Haverfordwest and St David's in Pembrokeshire, on Sunday morning.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the crash was reported to them just after 8am, but they do not yet know what time it had happened.

Inspector Alun Samuels said the road - the A487 - is closed while an investigation takes place.The investigation is still ongoing into want happened.

Caravans Burnt out at Kiln Park Tenby

Four fire crews from Tenby, Pembroke Dock and Narberth were mobilised to Kiln Park Holiday site, Tenby at 1923hrs on Sunday 4th January 2009. Approximately, 14 unoccupied residential caravans were destroyed by fire.

Firefighters used three jets, four breathing apparatus sets and a water bowser. The operations were completed at midnight, and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage. The fire is being treated as a scene of crime and a joint investigation is currently being undertaken by the Fire Service and the Police to identify how the fire started.

28th December, 1pm St. Govans and Castlemartin Coastguard Rescue Teams were called to a 65yr old man from Narbeth, out fishing with a friend, on freshwater East Beach where he suffered a suspected heart attack. Stabilised by the Coastguard Team before being transported by ambulance to Withybush Hospital for treatment.

A £500 reward is being offered for information on who is behind a series of arson attacks on cars in a popular seaside town.

Police in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, are linking seven fires in the last week. No items were taken from any of the vehicles set alight.

The incidents happened in Lamack Vale, Oakridge Acres, Knowling Mead, Marsh Road and Tudor Way.

Police said they were increasing patrols in the area.

Detectives added that the reward would be paid for information leading to the arrest and conviction of offenders.

Ken Bruce Show’ Obliterates Port Authority VHF Channel

The VHF Marine Channel (ch12) for the Milford Haven Port Authority, which is the main channel for communications between all vessels entering, in or leaving The Haven and the Port Authority was obliterated this morning (15/12/08) for some time, by the voice and music of the BBC Radio 2 show hosted by Ken Bruce. No communications at all could be made between the port and shipping clearly making a very dangerous situation. The Milford Haven Coastguard was requested to assist in the identification of the offending vessel blocking the channel and the suspected culprit was found to be in the area of the Smalls Traffic Separation Scheme. Because of the strength of the radio broadcast and the channel it was on, the Coastguard could not communicate with vessels in the area on the usual VHF Channel (Ch16) the Distress, safety and broadcasting channel to request vessels to check their radios. Coastguards took the unusual action of contacting the BBC in London and putting in a request for Ken Bruce to actually ask live on the air for the offender/s to check their VHF radios. Mr Bruce in his inimitable fashion relayed the request live on air and almost at once the blocking ceased and, we suspect, one red faced radio operation of a vessel will now always check his Marine Radio to ensure all buttons etc. are in their correct positions.

Meeting in Haverfordwest for County's taxi trade

It appears that since the ‘Industrial Action’ of the summer the public still thinks that we are not approachable. WE ARE the staff manned this station throughout the problems and are eager to get all sea- farers and coastal users back into the terrific liaison we had prior to the ‘summer of discontent’.-

Pembrokeshire Motorists to stop for school patrol crossing officers

Motorists in Pembrokeshire are being warned that they are breaking the law if they don’t stop when ordered to do so by school patrol crossing officers.

The warning comes after a patrol officer in the south of the county had to snatch a child out of the way of a car that ignored an order to stop.

The car’s number plate was noted and the incident is being investigated by police.

School crossing patrol officers are among the few people who can stop traffic by law. Legislation introduced in 2001 means they can help all pedestrians – even if there are no children present.

Woman dies in two-car collision

A woman has died after a collision between two cars in Pembrokeshire on Wednesday night.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash which happened on the B4329 near Woodstock Cross, Haverfordwest at around 2330 GMT.

The woman was driving a Nissan Micra when she received fatal injuries in the collision with a Peugeot 306. The driver of the Peugeot was uninjured.

Any witnesses should contact Dyfed Powys Police on 0845 330 2000.

Two fire crews from Haverfordwest attended the scene of the crash.

The road was closed after the crash for investigations to take place

Rescue in Atrocious Weather at Porth Clais

Following a ‘999’ call to the Operations Room, Milford Haven Coastguard at 2.25pm 9th November the St. Davids Coastguard rescue Team and the RNLI All Weather Lifeboat from St. Davids raced, in atrocious weather and seas, to a local fishing vessel, with a man and two children aboard, in difficulties at Porth Clais Harbour. The vessel had fouled its propeller in the harbour and the skipper was clinging onto another moored vessel in very choppy seas. The lifeboat edged its way into the harbour and managed to take the boat and passengers to safety in calmer waters.

Missiles were thrown at moving traffic

Police in Haverfordwest are appealing for information after missiles were thrown at moving traffic from the bridge over Freemens Way, Haverfordwest.

The incident happened on November 1st at around 8pm.

The driver concerned had to take evasive action and fortunately nobody was hurt.

This is the second such incident in the county recently. Last month a group of youths threw water bombs and stones at cars travelling down the Fishguard bypass. Again the driver took evasive action but his windscreen was damaged by the missiles.

Police are asking any witnesses to the Haverfordwest incident to contact PC 626 Davies at Haverfordwest police station on 0845 330 2000.

Kingfisher gets a pounding in Fishguard Harbour

During the afternoon of 1^st November the Fishguard Coastguard Rescue Team kept observations on a Yacht, which appeared to be struggling with the strong winds and tide outside the outer breakwater of Fishguard Harbour. The vessel’s safety was monitored until the crew managed to return to the inner harbour and tie up to a buoy.

At 8pm 1^st November a call was received in the Operations Room at Milford Haven stating that a yacht called ‘Kingfisher’ had broken its moorings and was now grounded in Lower Fishguard Harbour. The Fishguard Coastguard Rescue team were called and the Fishguard RNLI All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats were launched. It was established that the vessel was the same one that caused concern earlier in the day and that there was no one aboard.

Whilst the Lifeboats dealt with the yacht the Fishguard Coastguards began a search for an owner. From enquiries by the Harbour Master and in local public houses it appeared that the single crew member had moored the vessel but because of the weather and his soaking wet clothing decided to come ashore and go home. He was last seen getting on a bus for Cardigan. Further extensive enquiries revealed that the owner lived in Newcastle Emlyn and he was finally contacted. The vessel by now had been taken under tow by the Lifeboats and placed on their own safe moorings in the Harbour.

Fortunately this incident had a happy ending but it is vital that any moorings should be thoroughly checked and vessels tied correctly and if in a harbour not usually used to inform the Harbour Master of a vessels presence and the intentions of the crew.

Busy time for Pembrokeshire fire crews

Pembrokeshire's fire crews were called to the Whitland area last night after widespread flooding in the town and nearby villages.

Appliances from Tenby and Crymych were called to deal with flooded properties and to divert floodwater . Two appliances from Tenby were called to Llangan Road in Whitland to prevent flood water entering a property. Tenby crews were also involved in diverting water from another property in Llanddowror.

Medium-scale air exercise over Pembrokeshire in November

RESIDENTS in parts of Dorset are being warned by the Ministry of Defence about a medium-scale air exercise that will take part in the area next week.

Exercise aircraft will operate in Dorset between November 6 and 7 and then move to the Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire areas of Wales from November 10-14.

Code-named Early Resolve, the exercise is designed to practice close air support operations and forward air control techniques.

This training is essential for the UK Aircrews and Ground Forces and allows them to practice various techniques and procedures before possible deployment to operational theatres.

Flat Fire at Tenby

Fire crews from Tenby, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest attended the scene of a fire involving flats situated above the Woolworths store, Tenby. Firefighters were alerted at 14:38 on Monday (27th October).

One person managed to escape to the roof of the building. Two hose reel jets and ten breathing apparatus were used to deal with the incident. The casualty is believed to be suffering from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the blaze is not known at this stage

New Number Launched for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has launched a new telephone number which is intended to provide all non-emergency callers to the organisation with lower call charges to reflect the Service´s commitment to customer care and quality service delivery.

The new number, 0370 6060 699 is deliberately similar to the existing Headquarters number, which will hopefully make it easier for callers to remember.

Speaking at the launch of the new number, Nigel Williams (Head of Information & Communications Technology) said:

"The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is organised into six County Commands, one each to cover the unitary authority areas of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, City and County of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Powys. All external calls are answered bilingually at our main Headquarters in Carmarthen, so it´s important that all customers receive value for money when contacting the Service - our new non geographic number does just that with calls from BT landlines typically incurring charges of just 4 pence per minute or less when a discount scheme is used.

Nigel Williams continued:

"The 0370 6060 699 number is specifically for non emergency administrative calls. In the event of an emergency the public should always dial 999."

Test centre to Close in Haverfordwest Pembrokeshire

The fight to keep driving and motorbike testing centres in Haverfordwest was dealt another blow when it was announced that the car testing centre will close in February.

Representatives from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) told members of the driving training industry in Pembrokeshire that the town’s test centre will close on February 15th.

A spokesman said: “The DSA will be vacating its existing driving test centre site in Haverfordwest as its landlord, Pembrokeshire County Council, has issued a notice which requires DSA to vacate its manoeuvring area by February 15th.

“This makes the current centre operationally unsuitable, so all testing facilities will be withdrawn from this date.”

Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Wrexham, Mold and Caerphilly have been named in a list of the UK’s top 50 home business hotspots in the Home Business Report, which analysed the rise of businesses run from home.

Cardiff achieved 8th spot, Swansea 25th, Newport 28th, Wrexham 35th, Mold 41st and Caerphilly 50th. Taking first place is London followed by Leicester.

The report – from Enterprise Nation – reveals that home businesses are booming despite the economic crisis. Two thirds (66%) expect to increase turnover in the next six months, while more than half (58%) are developing new products and services.

Watch out for Parcel scam in Pembrokeshire

People are being warned to be aware of a mail scam that could land them with an extra £15 on their phone bill.

Cards have been delivered to homes throughout Pembrokeshire from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service), asking for collection of a parcel that could not be delivered.

Callers are asked to ring 0906 6611911 to arrange re-delivery.

But beware, said a police spokesman: "Do not call this number, as it is a mail scam originating from Belize, and you will end up being billed £15 for the phone call."

Anyone who receives a card with the above details should contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 2396655.

Two men remanded over Rape charge in Pembroke

Two men were remanded in custody today after appearing before Haverfordwest Magistrates Court charged with rape and attempted rape following an alleged attack in Pembroke.

Twenty-nine year old, Reyad Abbas of 11 Main Street, Pembroke and 23-year old Farhad Mohammedi of 69 Norfolk Road, Wolverhampton were charged with the alleged assault of a 44-year-old woman in the early hours of Sunday, October 12th at a path known as Morgan’s Way off Main Street.

Both men spoke through an interpreter only to confirm their names and addresses.

Six people are being questioned by police over an early morning sex attack on a woman in an alley.

Dyfed-Powys Police said the victim was assaulted at about 0220 BST on Sunday off Main Street, Pembroke, opposite Brown's cafe.

Detectives are particularly keen to speak to anyone who walked or drove past the area at the time.

An incident room has been opened at Haverfordwest police station.

HPV jabs rolled out in Pembrokeshire Today

Year 8 pupils in Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest, were the first in the Pembrokeshire county to receive the HPV jabs this morning 7.10.08. The scheme is now being rolled out across the county.

The routine vaccination scheme is to protect young girls against cervical cancer has started, it helps against the human papilloma virus (HPV), which causes 70 per cent of cervical cancers, is part of a Welsh Assembly initiative.

It is estimated that HPV vaccinations, which involve a course of three injections over a period of approximately six months, have the potential to save the lives of around 400 women each year in the UK. More information Here

Cabinet approves Pembrokeshire black out

This blackout will save Pembrokeshire County Council hundreds of thousands of pounds every year and is expected to cut carbon emissions by over 500 tonnes it was approved by the council's cabinet on Monday 6.10.08.

The finer details of exactly where, and by how long, lights will be turned off will be decided by experts, but a council report says that around 95% of Pembrokeshire's street lights may be extinguished between midnight and 5.30am each night.

The report says that lights in town centres and those connected with safety schemes will stay on as normal.

Collie dog rescued from the Beach Lodge Valley, Tenby

‘Ben’ the 13yr old deaf cross breed collie was walking with his owners on the cliff path at Lodge Valley, Tenby during the afternoon of 6th October when in his doggy mind he saw something worth chasing and ran off straight over the cliff edge and onto the slab scree 60ft cliffs. He slipped and slithered down the rocks ending up on the inaccessible beach below. His distressed owners called the Coastguards and Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked together with the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat from Tenby. A Lifeboat crew man waded ashore and pacified the friendly dog that had injured his paw in the fall, whilst the Coastguard Crew set up their cliff rescue ropes and went down onto the beach. Once there the dog was attached to the ropes in a way that he could be ‘walked’ back up the cliffs with the assistance of the Coastguard rope man, and in a way not to aggravate the injury to his paw. ‘Ben’ was reunited with his relieved owners, on holiday from Leyland, Lancashire, and taken to a local vet for his paw to be tended to.

BUY-TO-LET house owners in Wales are being warned that HM Revenue and Customs is stepping up its efforts to recoup lost revenue from tax avoidance in rental income.

It means buy-to-let investors must keep accurate records or face inspection from the taxman, says the Cardiff office of business and financial adviser Grant Thornton.

HMRC routinely requests details from local government authorities and letting agents about rental income and the sale of properties.

As part of a new initiative to identify untaxed rental income and gains, the information supplied will now be “data matched” to identify individuals who have not made the appropriate tax returns.

From April 1 next year if HMRC suspect a landlord has untaxed rental income and gains, officers will have the power to turn up and inspect business records at the business premises.

For an individual landlord this can include their private residence if this is where business records are kept, although there are restrictions on HMRC accessing areas of a home that are purely residential. Grant Thornton tax partner Louise Evans said: “It’s likely that only the most serious cases will warrant a knock on the door from the taxman, but it signals HMRC’s intent to pursue persistent tax evaders.

“Landlords need to be aware that HMRC has new inspection powers for visiting business premises to look at records and these powers are expected to take effect from next April.

“We encourage landlords to keep business and private records separately to avoid an inspector seeing personal records that they have no right to.” The occupier will normally be notified at least seven days in advance of an inspection however, in limited circumstances, no notice need be given for an inspection and officers can turn up unannounced.

The increased focus on the buy-to-let market is part of an ongoing HMRC sweep on tax evaders. Landlords should ensure they keep records of property income and expenses for six years after the tax year to which they apply. Under HMRC’s new investigation process the first indication something may be wrong could be a phone call from an HMRC officer.

Ms Evans added: “It’s crucial to notify HMRC of any new source of taxable income including rental income as soon as possible. If landlords do realise they have made a mistake they should take tax advice immediately and contact HMRC, before the taxman approaches them. The voluntary disclosure of any omission is looked upon favourably by HMRC and a better tax position can frequently be obtained.”

A counter assistant at a Chinese takeaway in South Wales made an expensive mistake when she offered an off duty Trading Standards Officer a fake DVD with her takeaway dinner, a court heard.

Haverfordwest magistrates heard that following the offer the TSO initiated a probe into goings on at the City Chinese Restaurant and Takeaway in Charles Street, Milford Haven.

This started with TSOs carrying out undercover purchases of the pirate DVDs and concluded with them conducting a raid on the premises.

Tipped off to the irregularities a UK Border Agency team also joined in on the raid resulting in the discovery of six Chinese illegal immigrants at the property.

All six are now awaiting deportation.

Long Wu and Yang Wu Fu admitted preparing and offering the fake videos for sale.

Wu was given an 18-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £360 costs.
Fu was fined £165 and ordered to pay £375 costs.

The fake DVDs, including Kung Fu Panda and Ironman, were ordered to be seized.

Streets in Haverfordwest are to be Resurfaced

Several streets in Haverfordwest are to be resurfaced over the coming months, and footpaths will be improved, as the enhancement programme continues.

In total, Pembrokeshire County Council anticipates spending in excess of £1 million this financial year on improvement works in the town.

The road resurfacing and footpath improvements will take place on a street-by-street basis, as works progress.

Most work will be carried out under temporary traffic management control, but it may be necessary to close some roads for limited periods if carriageway widths are insufficient to maintain traffic flow.

Where possible these closures will be carried out during evenings and weekends. However, due to the scale of the schemes it may be necessary to close certain roads during the week.

The Council will notify the public before any closure takes place, and provide alternative routes and signage.

Pedestrian access will be maintained to properties in the affected streets during any closures, as well as limited vehicular access.

The roads which will be affected are High Street, Upper Market Street, Bush Row, Albany Terrace, Winch Lane, Quay Street / Union Hill, St Thomas Green, Merlins Hill, Albert Street, and the B4327 Portfield.

The first closure will be at High Street, which will be closed for four consecutive evenings starting on Monday, 6th October.

Boat users risking their lives by not following safety advice

Over the last few days a number of small vessels have been given assistance by Coastguards and Lifeboats after they were taken to sea without having even the basic safety equipment for communicating a problem on board. Fortunately all aboard were rescued without harm to themselves or their boats. It is VITAL, even when taking a small boat a short distance off shore, that some means of communication is carried. The best means is a VHF Radio with channels specifically selected for maritime use. Flares are also desirable and when these are fired can be seen for quite a distance. Even a mobile telephone is better than nothing, but beware once a mobile phone gets wet it is useless and communications can be very erratic at sea with cliffs, headlands etc. interrupting the signal strength, and remember your phone is only good to use, even in an emergency call ‘999’, if you are in the footprint of an aerial of your network provider. ( Have you ever seen an aerial at sea???? )

Canoeist has lucky escape Ramsey Sound

A 48 year old female canoeist, staying at a camp site in St. Davids, had an extremely lucky rescue at approx. 2.15pm on 16th September, when she lost an oar in Ramsey Sound and fell out of her canoe. Her Dilemma was spotted by a member of the public from nearby cliffs and the Coastguards at Milford Haven Operations Room were called. Fortunately for the canoeist the registered vessel the ‘Viking Explorer’ was nearby and saw her struggling in the water. They immediately went to her aid and hauled her and her canoe aboard. They deposited the woman at the Lifeboat Station at St. Justinians where the St. Davids Coastguard Rescue Team was waiting. After being checked over she returned to the camp site with strong words of advice from the Coastguards. This Lady had canoed out into extremely tricky waters without ANY MEANS of calling for assistance, no flares, radio, mobile phone and not wearing very high visibility clothing. She was in the water for approx. 10 – 15 minutes and if the ‘Viking Explorer’ had not spotted her, the outcome of her folly could have been disastrous.
Whenever you go out onto the water in what ever vessel ALWAYS carry with you some means of communication for a sudden emergency.

83 year old Man Breaks Shoulder on Coast Path near Mwnt.

An 83 year old man from Suffolk was stretchered off the coastal path near Mwnt by the Gwbert and New Quay Coastguard Rescue Teams during the afternoon of 16^th September, when in inappropriate footwear and bad weather he decided to go for a walk and slipped in the wet conditions causing injuries to his shoulder and ribs. After being taken off the coast path by the Coastguards he was placed into a land ambulance at Mwnt and taken to hospital for treatment.

11 year olds cut off on rocks Tenby.

Following a call to the Coastguard Operations Room at Milford Haven at approx. 4.30pm 13th September, the Tenby Coastguard Rescue Team and the RNLI Inshore Lifeboat went to the beach below the Imperial Hotel, Tenby where two 11 year old boys from Aberdare, South Wales, were trapped on rocks by the incoming tide.

The Coastguard Team managed to calm the two frightened boys down before they were taken off the rocks by the Inshore Lifeboat and reunited with their parents at the Lifeboat Station.

St. Davids Coastguard attended coasteerer with a suspected broken ankle

A 30yr old Lady, from Rochester, Kent and on holiday staying in Carmarthen, was ‘Coasteering’ with a group of approx. 50 colleagues in Abereiddy Bay during the afternoon of 13^th September when she slipped on rocks and fell into the sea. Her fellow coasteerers managed to retrieve her from the sea and called the Coastguards. St. Davids Coastguard Rescue Team attended and administered first aid before they had to remove the injured lady from the beach because of the rising tide. The woman was then transferred to the land ambulance and taken to Withybush hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

Non-essential street lights maybe dimmed in Pembrokeshire

Pembrokeshire is the latest county which might be switching off non-essential street lights after midnight to save on energy bills.

Councillors have asked the county's cabinet to look at the measure which could save £213,000 a year.It will be considered by Pembrokeshire's cabinet on 6 October.

If Pembrokeshire's cabinet backs the switch-off some street lights would be dimmed between midnight and 5.30am, areas covered by CCTV, pedestrian crossings and trunk roads would not be affected.

The developers seeking planning permission for a huge housing development on the outskirts of Haverfordwest believe that the Local Highways Authority (LHA) should fund road improvements, which could cost more than £4.5 million.

Plans, focusing on access to the of for 962 homes, a primary school and public open spaces on land to the north and south of Slade Lane are being considered by the Planning and Rights of Way Committee .

An increase in traffic around the site, adjacent to Thomas Parry Way and the St David's Road, would result in half of the 12 junctions assessed being over capacity and contributions would have to be made by developers to improve them.

The environmentally friendly scheme received over 850 letters of support and has been praised by experts from around the world. The Design Commission for Wales undertook an independent review of the plans in April and concluded they were ‘inspirational’ and a ‘benchmark for environmental rural regeneration’.

The Design Commission praised the use of locally sourced materials which give a strong Welsh character to highly affordable homes. With average local house prices at over £170 000, Lammas’ plans offer 9 homes, complete with 8 acres of land for £80 000 each.

WALES’ tourism promotion body Visit Wales have been forced to apologise after mistakenly placing three Gower beaches in Pembrokeshire in a guide.

The Active Wales brochure claimed Gower beauty spots Langland, Rhossili and Llangennith were all in Pembrokeshire.

Visit Wales, the Welsh Assembly Government’s tourism arm, says the brochure will be amended for its next edition. Conservative AM Alun Cairns described the mistake as a “serious issue”.

He said a number of visitors to Wales could be misdirected as a result.

Bomb squad called to make hand grenade safe

The bomb disposal squad from Hereford was called by local Police as local nursing director, Mandy Procter who works at Tenby's Park House Court nursing home ,was gardening and found a hand grenade, with the pin still in it in the lavender bush in her garden, Mandy is at the moment Renovating an old house up in Gray Avenue Manorbier.

Mandy at first thought it was a toy but after looking harder then realised it was a real grenade and placed it out the way in a flower pot. A couple of days later a builder working there rediscovered the grenade in the flowerpot, Mandy then thought she better call in the experts the bomb squad then made the device safe.

Dyfed-Powys Police are warning the public of the danger of postal scams after a large amount of fraudulent mail has been circulating in the Tenby area.

The mail offers large cash prizes but in return asks for customers' personal details, and usually elicits their bank details.

"Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when receiving mail offering large cash prizes," said a police spokesman.

"There are currently a number of postal scams in circulation which do not appear to be legitimate. Please be careful when corresponding with theses companies if you are not certain of their legitimacy."
